Ian trained in and worked for many years as a typographer and graphic designer which led to an interest in the less ephemeral craft of creative lettering and calligraphy. He has recently rediscovered and developed this interest as can be seen displayed in the Lettering Gallery. The work, unlike most graphic design, is not concerned with communicating information quickly. The work takes a little more time to appreciate, it is to be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. It requires, unusually, to be viewed and read at the same time.
This work can be appreciated as hand made letters, as intricate colour shapes between letters and as a response to the meaning of the words themselves. Whether these are witty, inspiring, profound, nostalgic, thought provoking or otherwise meaningful, they are likely to produce a response.
The Watercolour Gallery shows a range of recently produced original paintings.
